The head of the Regional Food Distribution Association in Thunder Bay says he's seeing the same trend as those outlined in a new report from the Ontario Association of Food Banks, including an increase in users.

Volker Kromm said the Hunger Report shows the number of first-time food bank users to be up about 20 per cent over last year.

He said that number is even higher in Thunder Bay.

"Numbers indicate there was about a 47 per cent increase over last year in the number of people who have been visiting a food bank for the first time. It just tells me that the poor are getting poorer, and so no surprise there."

Senior and students

Kromm said food banks in northwestern Ontario, like those all across the province, are also seeing a marked increase in the number of seniors and students using their service.

He said seniors tell him they're finding it harder to make ends meet.

"The cost of fuel, the cost of of food is rising a little too fast and so it's becoming difficult to make those adjustments."

Kromm said he sees the food needs of single people and the elderly reflected in requests for holiday hampers.

He said last year about 960 people registered for the program.

He said they're expecting to deliver well over 1,000 of the special packages this year.

Growing dependency

Kromm said certain groups are becoming more dependent on food banks.

"Those folks that are trying to live off minimum wage, or part-time jobs... None of these jobs come with benefits and so the cost of raising a family is next to impossible."

This Friday, CBC is holding its annual "Sounds of the Season" event in support of local food banks. Superior Morning will broadcast live from the Regional Food Distribution Association on Syndicate Avenue in Thunder Bay.

People are invited to drop by during the show, or bring donations any time during the day.
