CBC Thunder Bay's Sounds Of the Season celebrates a plane full of food bound for northern First Nation

CBC Thunder Bay's 2016 Sounds Of the Season special was live from the Wasaya Airways hangar in Thunder Bay, Ont., Friday morning, as many individuals, businesses and organizations donated food to help the less fortunate.

CBC Thunder Bay is inviting the public to drop by the Wasaya Airways hangar from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Friday December 9th for the annual Sounds of the Season fundraising event. (CBC)

CBC Thunder Bay's 2016 Sounds Of the Season special was live from the Wasaya Airways hangar in Thunder Bay, Ont., Friday morning, as many individuals, businesses and organizations donated food to help the less fortunate.

Lisa Laco and the Superior Morning crew broadcast from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., from the Thunder Bay International Airport, with the goal of filling an airplane with food, bound for Sandy Lake First Nation.

10,000 lbs (4536 kilograms) of food was loaded onto a Hawker Siddeley 748 — our sleigh for this mission — to fly to Sandy Lake.

One of the morning show's many highlights came just before 7:30 a.m., when vehicles representing a number of organizations and businesses, including Thunder Bay and Nishnawbe Aski police, the Thunder Bay International Airport Authority, TBT Engineering, Clow Darling and Wisk Air, entered the hangar in parade formation with lights flashing, where they dropped off boxes full of food to be loaded on the plane to the far north.
CBC Thunder Bay also has journalists on the ground in Sandy Lake, as Ron Desmoulins and Jody Porter made the trip to the far north, where they await the plane's arrival, and fill us in on what's happening in the community.

This week's celebrations included the community's 2016 Santa Claus parade.

Saint Nick also dropped by the Superior Morning live special, before flying back north in a helicopter.

The morning broadcast also included amazing musical guests, like the Honest Heart Collective and the Hillcrest String Quartet, which featured musicians with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.

Wasaya Airways, Erb Trucking and the Trucks for Change network have all been instrumental in getting the donated food to its final destination.

In addition, from southern Ontario, Leamington-based Southwestern Ontario Gleaners has donated a huge shipment of soup mix, snacks and fresh produce.
