SIU investigating a shooting involving police near Thunder Bay

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a police-involved shooting that took place near Thunder Bay this week.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a shooting involving police that took place near Thunder Bay this week.

The SIU said the shooting happened in the area of Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Road at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

In a media release, the SIU said that preliminary information suggests police received 911 calls from drivers travelling in the area, reporting a man with a shotgun walking on the highway.

Responding officers located the 58-year-old man, the SIU said. The agency said the man fired his gun, hitting the police cruiser.

An officer then shot the man, the SIU said, who was taken to hospital with a "serious injury."

No officers were injured. An update on the man's condition was not available on Friday.

The SIU has identified one subject and one witness officer. It's assigned three investigators, and two forensic investigators.

No further details have yet been provided.

In a media release, Thunder Bay police said they cannot provide further details, as the SIU has invoked its mandate.
