Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer fired his gun at a vehicle during an incident on Walpole Island First Nation on Sunday.

According to the police watchdog's preliminary report, OPP officers were dispatched to assist the Walpole Island Police Service with a weapons investigation in the area of Pump House Road and Shawnee Road.

They say there was an interaction between officers and occupants of a suspect vehicle — which included "the discharge of firearms by officers."

Police say the suspect vehicle fled the scene, however, two occupants were later apprehended.

"No one was struck as a result of the firearm discharge, and no one suffered any serious injuries," the SIU said in an online statement.

OPP had previously reported the first call came in around 8:50 a.m.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact them.

Its mandate is to probe occurrences across the province involving municipal, regional and provincial police officers.
