Students who aspire to wear the iron ring are competing for gold this weekend at a national engineering competition in Montreal, QC — and Laurentian University's team is defending a number one title.

Undergrads from the Bharti School of Engineering made headlines last year when their both the junior and senior design teams took first place at the Canadian Engineering Competition in St. John's, NL.

Stephane Labine was on that winning junior team, and is headed to McGill University in Montreal this week as a senior team member.

He told CBC that he learned a lot last year in competition.

"Most teams try to think of something that's going to try to impress the judges and go really complex," he said.

"Depending on how you read the rules, you have to see what matters most ... We built something that was really simple, quick and efficient [and won]."
