Two people killed in separate weekend crashes on Highway 11 in Northern Ontario

Icy road conditions Friday and Saturday across northeastern Ontario forced the closure of various stretches of several highways, and a pair of major crashes have left two people dead.

One person was killed in a serious head-on collision being investigated by the Ontario Provincial Police  on Highway 11, near Marten River, about 40 kilometres north of North Bay..

On Saturday, December 28, 2024, at approximately 11:45 a.m., the North Bay OPP,  District of Nipissing Paramedic Services (EMS), and the Marten River Fire Department responded to the collision.

One driver, a 52-year-old from Richmond Hill, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The highway was closed in both directions between North Bay and Highway 64 for approximately 4.5 hours.

On Friday, December 27, 2024, at around 7:00 a.m., the Kirkland Lake OPP, Timiskaming District Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Kirkland Lake Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision involving five vehicles on Highway 11 North of Highway 112.

A 53-year-old person from Montreal was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. 

The investigation was completed after 20 hours, but the highway remained closed for a further 13 hours due to weather conditions.
