Icy conditions wreaked havoc on several northern highways on Friday, and saw many closures.

Highway 11 in the Timiskaming Shores area re-opened Friday evening after both lanes were closed much of the day, following what police say was a serious collision involving five vehicles early Friday morning.

Kirkland Lake OPP say around 7:00 a.m., police, Timiskaming District Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and the Kirkland Lake Fire Department responded to a five-vehicle crash on Highway 11 near Highway 112, north of New Liskeard.

Friday night, the OPP issued statements saying there were various closures across the north due to weather conditions, including another part of Highway 11 from Kirkland Lake to Cochrane, and between Cochrane and Kapuskasing.

A stretch of Highway 101 between Matheson and the Quebec border was also closed, as was Highway 655 between highway 11 and Kidd Creek Road in Timmins.

The OPP were advising drivers to avoid the area.
