Soccer star Kaylyn Kyle hosting weekend academies in Saskatoon, Regina

Up to 300 young soccer players in Saskatoon will have a chance to learn from a homegrown star.

Kaylyn Kyle is hosting her first-ever two-day soccer academy in Saskatoon the first weekend of October.

Kyle plays for Portland in the National Women's Soccer League. She is also a member of the Canadian women's national soccer team and won bronze at the 2012 Olympics in London.

"Growing up in Saskatchewan, I didn't have a lot of opportunity for someone that played my sport to come in and actually coach me one on one," Kyle said.

Now with a month off, she thought it was a perfect time to come home and do this.

"There's so many talented individuals here," she went on. "So if there's one or two that come out of here or ten that could get a scholarship, whether it's U of S, U of R or even down in the States, I'm doing my job of giving back."

The weekend academy is open to male and female players of all levels, ages eight to 16.

Kyle, her parents and her sister have gone to great lengths to make it a memorable experience.

For their $159 registration fee, they'll receive gift bags sponsored by Under Armour, Quest Nutrition and Booster Juice.

"Kaylyn will be fully available for instruction, interaction with the players, photos, autographs, and will do a talk each day to the different age groups," said sister Courtnee Kyle.

It's an event Kaylyn is looking forward to just as much.

"For me, it's just seeing these little kids. I mean, I get tweets from them, Instagrams from them, Facebooks from them, just saying that I'm an inspiration. So, for me being 26, to be someone's role model is huge for me." 

She has recruited several university players to help coach.

Corporate sponsor Cameco is sending kids from core areas of the city who might not otherwise be abe to take part. She also has support from Sport Chek, London Drugs and Tomahawk Shades.

Registration is filling up fast.

Another weekend academy is slated for October the 10th and 11th in Regina.

"The goal at the end of the weekends is to donate a portion of the revenue generated back into the community," Courtnee said.
