A 29-year-old man is facing charges including abduction and resisting arrest after allegedly trying to steal an infant on Tuesday.

At roughly 2 a.m. CST, officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 700 block of Appleby Drive in the city's Meadowgreen neighbourhood for a report of a disturbance, according to a police news release.

Officers were told that before they got there, a man had been in an apartment suite with two other people and a baby before fleeing suddenly with the infant. One of the people inside the suite had reportedly given chase, getting the child back.

The suspect then returned to a different suite in the same apartment, police said. Residents told officers the man was armed with a knife and was threatening people.

Police say the man then left the apartment and tried to get into other suites in the hallway before chasing the first victim for a second time.

Officers found the suspect nearby, bleeding and acting in an aggressive manner, police said. Officers deployed bear spray, but it did not stop the man, police said. The suspect is believed to have been high on methamphetamine.

The man was eventually taken into custody safely by police.

He was treated on scene for non-life threatening injuries before being transported to hospital.

Alongside charges of abduction, the 29-year-old is facing charges of uttering threats and breaching probation.
