Saskatoon residents are reminded to keep their sidewalks clear as the snow melts to prevent icy conditions.

According to the Saskatoon Fire Department, here are some ways to keep your sidewalk clear:

  • Chip away the ice during warm daylight hours.
  • Shovel snow onto your lawn and keep it off the road.
  • Microwave sand before putting it on ice, allowing the warm sand to stick and create a level of traction.

According to a City of Saskatoon sidewalk clearing bylaw, residents are responsible for removing snow, ice and any other debris from sidewalks alongside a property within the first 48 hours of it being there.

The fines range from $100 to $2,000 depending on how many times you're caught not following the bylaw.
