A 21-year-old Saskatoon woman pleaded guilty Wednesday for her role in a fatal crash that killed two Saskatoon teens in May.

Cheyann Peeteetuce pleaded guilty in Court of Queen’s Bench to two counts of dangerous driving causing death. She will be back in court in March for the start of the sentencing process. She has been in custody since her arrest.

Peeteetuce was driving the stolen truck. The crash happened in the early evening of May 5 at 22nd Street West and Avenue M.

Police said the fatal sequence of events started when an officer spotted a green 1997 Chevy pick-up that had been reported stolen. The owner had left his keys in the truck.

The officer followed that truck for a few blocks and then turned on the emergency lights. At the time, Police Chief Clive Weighill said the in-car camera showed the truck bolting and accelerating north on Avenue M.

Eighteen seconds later, the truck smashed into the side of a Malibu travelling eastbound on 22nd Street towards the downtown. The car was carrying three students from Bethlehem High School who were on the their way to track practice.

The force of the collision was such that it flipped the Malibu onto its side and then drove it across two lanes, over a lawn and then pinned it against the side of a chiropractic centre.

J.P. Haughey, 17, and his front seat passenger, Sarah Wensley, 17, were killed. A 16-year-old girl in the backseat suffered serious injuries but survived.

The crash, and the fact the truck was stolen, drew attention to the issue of stolen autos in the city and how offenders are dealt with by the courts.

At the time of the crash, Peeteetuce was on probation for two auto thefts in January.

A second person in the suspect vehicle, an 18-year old-woman who was 17 at the time of the crash, is also before the courts. She has a trial set for January on charges of being a party to criminal negligence causing death.
