A fire that spewed black smoke and flames high above power lines in a Saskatoon neighbourhood was quickly tamed before the sun rose on Monday.

The fire was easily spotted by drivers on Idylwyld Drive around 6 a.m. CST, even though it started six blocks over on Avenue G near the intersection with 38th Street West.

A garage and a large spruce tree were fully engulfed by the time firefighters got there, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.

Firefighters tackled the fire from all sides to keep it from spreading further. The blaze was under control within 20 minutes and fully out by 7:45 a.m. CST, according to Saskatoon Fire.

The flames were close enough to power lines to prompt a call to city electrical crews.

The fire also damaged two neighbouring garages. (Submitted by Saskatoon Fire)

Aside from the main garage that caught fire, two nearby garages were damaged.

Fire investigators were still at the site Monday morning and had not yet found what caused it or estimated how much damage it caused.

No one was injured.
