The siding is melted and split apart, and the wood behind it is charred, but the structure of a garage in Saskatoon's Silverwood area still stands thanks to the quick action of a neighbour Sunday night.

A fire started around 10:30 p.m. CST on Verbeke Court, according to a Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) news release.

A neighbour grabbed a garden hose and managed to keep the fire from spreading, SFD said. By the time three fire trucks got there, all the crews could see was light smoke. They finished putting out the fire and cooled down any hotspots that remained, and found that the attic space in the garage was spared by the neighbour's quick action.

No one was hurt and the damage was restricted to the garage's exterior and the home next door, which got hit by the heat from the fire, the release said.

An investigator with SFD has not yet determined the cause. Total damage to the garage and neighbouring home is estimated at $50,000.

Saskatoon Police say they're looking for information from the public about the fire.  Anyone with information is asked to call police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
