Roughriders release quarterback Tino Sunseri, 10 others
Sunseri struggled since last season after Darian Durant's season-ending injury
After more than a year of struggling to establish himself, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have released quarterback Tino Sunseri.
Sunseri was cut loose following the Riders' first pre-season matchup against Edmonton on June 13.
The backup quarterback was one of 11 cuts the CFL club announced Sunday.
Sunseri struggled in 2014 to replace starter Darian Durant, when the veteran pivot's season ended with an injury in the Banjo Bowl in September.
The Riders re-signed Sunseri during the off-season. He appeared to be settling into the third-string position at training camp this spring behind Durant and Kevin Glenn.
On Saturday, Sunseri went into the game in the fourth quarter and threw an early interception that led to an Eskimos touchdown. He also faced back-to-back sacks during his shot at the quarterback spot.
The Riders fell 31-24 to the Eskimos in the pre-season game Saturday in Fort McMurray.
Saskatchewan also released 10 other players:
- Terrance Cobb, running back
- Darwin Cook, defensive back
- Eltoro Freeman, linebacker
- Joash Gesse, linebacker
- Terry Hart, offensive lineman
- Denton Kolodzinski, kicker
- Michael Philipp, offensive lineman
- Eric Thomas, wide receiver
- Cody Thornton, kicker
- Ryan Wellman, defensive lineman
