Tino Sunseri is still growing into the role of Roughriders' quarterback, but he proved himself on Sunday, head coach Corey Chamblin says.

The Riders overcame a 12-point deficit at half-time to win an overtime thriller against the Ottawa Redblacks 35-32.

Receiver Weston Dressler, whose day included a 78-yard punt return, a 60-yard receiving touchdown and a two point conversion that sent the game into overtime, earned much fan praise.

But Sunseri, who struggled in his first outing as starting pivot a week ago, ably acquitted himself this time.

Chamblin said he could see Sunseri getting stronger every quarter.

"The one thing about Tino is, I never saw doubt in his eyes," Chamblin said. "That was pretty awesome and he did what he needed to do.  He moved the ball and he helped us win it."

Sunseri completed 15 of 23 passes in the second half for 234 yards with two touchdowns.

"He commanded the game well. I think it slowed down for him," Chamblin said. "He was a bit rushed last week and probably had more nerves last week.

This week he looked a little bit more comfortable and I think as time goes along he will probably be a little more comfortable."

Sunseri was pushed into the spotlight after starting quarterback Darian Durant suffered a potentially season-ending injury during the Banjo Bowl game against Winnipeg.

"All week he [Durant] has been around and I think he did a good job of talking to Tino," Chamblin said.

"Not to discredit Darian, but I'm going to give credit to Tino and the way that he played and the way that he grew.  When you go through a growth process it doesn't matter who is around.  It's internal.  He did what he needed to do to take it to the next level."

The Riders, who are now 9-3, will be on the road for their next game Friday against Edmonton.
