The CFL has fined the Saskatchewan Roughriders $15,000 for a roster violation that happened in July.

The team has been accused on Wednesday of what the league calls "an in-game roster violation related to deployment of international players."

The incident happened during their game against the B.C. Lions on July 16 at Mosaic Stadium.

"The Saskatchewan Roughriders were fined for improperly playing too many international players on the defensive side of the ball for several plays," explained Paulo Senra, spokesperson for the CFL, in an email to CBC News.

According to game rules, of the 24 starters on a team, a minimum of seven players have to be Canadian.

"This is a fundamental breach of our roster guidelines and the fine represents that," Senra added.

A representative for the Roughriders said the team won't be commenting on the matter.

More infractions

Roughriders Thaddeus Coleman and Josiah St. John were also fined on Wednesday for infractions in last week's game against the Montreal Allouettes.

Coleman was fined for a dangerous block on Alouettes defensive lineman Aaron Lavarias, and St. John was fined for a chop block on Alouettes defensive lineman Vaughn Martin.
