Roughriders add 6, release 5, Terrell Maze retires with team
Defensive back Kacy Rodgers added to the active roster
It seems the roster moves never stop in Riderville.
On Tuesday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders continued to shuffle its roster adding six players – five of them were added to the practice roster – and releasing five others.
First, the team signed American defensive back Kacy Rodgers. The former University of Miami defender was added to the active roster.
Rodgers spent 2015 on the Edmonton Eskimos practice roster. He also spent time with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs in 2014.
The Riders added the following players to its practice roster:
- Running back Dillon Campbell
- Running back Michael Ford
- Defensive lineman Makana Henry
- Wide receiver Caleb Holley
- Linebacker Marte Sears
Campbell, 24, is an Whitby, Ont., native who was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 2015.
Ford, 26, comes to the Riders after spending the 2015 season with Hamilton. In six games, Ford had 33 carries for 186 yards, as well as nine receptions for 86 yards. A former LSU running back, Ford also spent time with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears.
Holley, 25, is a newcomer to the CFL. The Anchorage, Ark., native spent time with the Buffalo Bills in 2014.
- Roughriders trade Eskimos for defensive tackle Gregory Alexandre
- Stampeders rough up Riders in 4th quarter to extend unbeaten streak to 5
Sears, 25, returns to the Riders after being released by the team on June 19 following training camp.
The surplus of moves comes at a time when injuries have plagued Saskatchewan. There are currently 18 players on the six-game injured list. However, some of those players are not necessarily injured.
Saskatchewan released the following players on Tuesday:
- Defensive back Joel Brtka
- Quarterback B.J. Coleman
- Defensive lineman Cedric McKinley
- Offensive lineman Aaron Picton
- Offensive lineman D-Tre Player
Maze retires in Green and White
Terrell Maze has officially called it a career.
The former star defensive back with the Roughriders announced his retirement on Tuesday. Maze was among 19 players released by the team in December.
In four seasons with the Riders, Maze was considered by some to be the team's best lockdown defensive back. In that time, he recorded 140 tackles, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles.
Perhaps his most memorable play was a game-winning interception for a touchdown against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Aug. 7, 2014.
Maze was also a member of the 2013 Grey Cup champions.
I will no longer be playing anymore football in the future. But I am proud to have ended my athletic career in the @CFL w/ @sskroughriders
