Richest horse in harness racing to go for Gold Cup and Saucer
Foiled Again 1 of 14 contenders for one of harness racing's most presitigious contests
Harness racing's all-time richest winner, Foiled Again, is among the horses who'll be vying for a spot in this year's prestigious Gold Cup and Saucer Race, now in its 57th year.
Foiled Again has won more than $7.4 million over his career, making the 12-year-old horse the biggest money-winner in harness racing history, according to Standardbred Canada. He has 88 career wins and a lifetime record of 1:48 flat at Pocono Downs, the fastest of all the contenders.
"This shows the calibre of talent the Gold Cup attracts year after year," said Lee Drake, marketing manager with Red Shores. "We are pleased to have Foiled Again in the starting lineup."
Foiled Again will run Saturday in the first of two elimination trials preceding the big race. The horse drew the inside rail position for the trial, which is a prime spot.
Don't count them out yet
Mr. Massimo has the second-fastest lifetime record at 1:49, and 34 lifetime wins.
U.S.-owned Limelight Beach has another of the fastest lifetime records at 1:49.1 and $1.17 million in lifetime earnings.
Ys Lotus could be another one to watch: the horse won this year's Governor's Plate at Red Shores in Summerside in a record time of 1:51.4 and also won a July 30 feature race at the Charlottetown track with Marc Campbell in a "dazzling" time of 1:52.4, according to Standardbred Canada's website.
Island-owned DGs Camme, who won back-to-back Governor's Plates in 2014 and 2015, will also compete for a spot. The fastest he's raced is 1:51.
Alexas Jackpot, Big Boy Dreams, Big Surf, Dialamara, Go Daddy Go, Highland Tartan, Papparazzi Hanover, Senior Market and Shades of Bay round out the list of possible finalists.
Time to beat
Last year's race, which had to be rescheduled after stormy weather, was won by Take It Back Terry driven by Charlottetown's Marc Campbell in a time of 1:50.4. Atta Boy Dan and Lucan Hanover placed second and third. The 2014 title was taken by Newfoundland's Brad Foward and Bigtown Hero, also in 1:50.4.
The Gold Cup and Saucer will happen at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino in Charlottetown on August 20 just before midnight.
