Only two candidates put their names forward for the position, Fox and Belfast-Murray River MLA Darlene Compton.
Compton ran for the leadership against Lantz in February and said she was encouraged by some executive and caucus members to seek the interim leadership.
Fox has made it clear he has no intention of seeking the job on a permanent basis.
He previously said the interim leader should be solely focused on the job of getting the party back on track.
Fox will serve as opposition leader until a new permanent leader is chosen at a convention.
The party wanted an interim leader in place before its annual meeting on Oct. 24 and Fox said he will begin work on the meeting right away.
Lantz stepped down after the election in May that resulted in another Liberal majority.
The Tories improved their standing, winning eight seats, but Lantz did not win his district in Charlottetown. A recount showed he lost by 22 votes.
