Stratford-Kinlock MLA James Aylward announces he is running for the leadership of the P.E.I. Progressive Conservative Party.

James Aylward, the MLA for Stratford-Kinlock, has announced he will run for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative party in Prince Edward Island.

On Monday evening, supporters crammed into Stratford town hall. It was a kitchen-party atmosphere that featured a three-piece band before the announcement.

Many Tory party members were in attendance, including business operator Jamie Fox, who placed third in the last leadership race. It was speculated that he would run for the leadership himself, but after being introduced, Fox declared he was throwing his support behind Aylward.

Aylward said the PC party is gaining momentum in the province.

“It’s time for the tired government to go and make room for something new,” he said.

Among his priorities, Aylward said he would focus on affordable and accessible health care, protection of environment, innovation and less red tape for small business.

“Fiscal responsibility is a major priority in my campaign,” he said. “Tax dollars are your dollars. It is time those dollars are spent wisely.”

He took aim at the province’s debt as well.

“It took 150 years of governments to rack up $1 billion in debt. It took the current administration seven years to increase that to $3 billion. We cannot afford that any longer,” he said.

“My team will guide this province to a level of financial stability.”

The party will choose a new leader Feb. 28 at a convention at the University of Prince Edward Island field house.

Monday was the first day candidates could announce their intention to run.
