Darlene Compton, PC leadership candidate, calls province 'adrift'
Power needs to be removed from a 'tired and disconnected crew,' says Compton
Darlene Compton announced her candidacy for the P.E.I. Progressive Conservative Party leadership Wednesday afternoon in Belfast.
Compton said the "decision to run did not come lightly," but that government is "adrift" and power must be taken away from a "tired and disconnected crew."
She said the PC party needs someone who can relate to all Islanders.
"Together we have much to do to build a better tomorrow for Islanders," she said. "This Island is small enough to create its own destiny, and big enough to make it happen. Join me in creating that destiny."
Compton stressed that fiscal responsibility needs to become a priority because "spending is out of control" and said the needs of everyday Islanders are being ignored. She also said job creation and support of social programs will help Islanders succeed.
Compton supports the primary industries of agriculture, fishing and tourism and wants to promote the Island's unique brands.
Her other priorities include the environment, the promotion of individual achievement in schools, improving the quality of life for seniors and better health care, with a particular focus on addictions.
Compton also ran in the 2011 provincial election in the Belfast-Murray River riding but was defeated by incumbent Charlie McGeoghegan by eight votes.
She is the second person to announce a candidacy for the Tory leadership.
On Monday, James Aylward, MLA for Stratford-Kinlock announced his intentions in Stratford.
The party will choose its new leader Feb. 28 at a convention at the University of Prince Edward Island field house.
