Sports and culture are at the heart of the final two proposals competing for the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats.

The National Capital Commission said Tuesday that it will review the bids by DCDLS Group (formerly Devcore Group) and Rendez Vous LeBreton Group, which represents the Ottawa Senators, to make sure they meet requirements ahead of public consultations in the new year.

When shortlisted in February, the NCC said both proposed green spaces, commercial and residential developments, as well as their own unique facilities for the 9.3-hectare site.

Rendez Vous LeBreton Group also proposed "a major event centre for sports and entertainment performances" while DCDLS proposed "a concept with multiple cultural institutions developed around an grand allée."

The NCC said more details about the proposals will be released during public consultations scheduled for January 26 and 27 at the Canadian War Museum. The public will also be invited to offer feedback on the proposals online.

The winning bid is expected to be announced in early 2017.

The NCC initially invited four groups to submit high-quality design proposals and financial plans after being shortlisted in February 2015. The NCC said that two of the pre-qualified groups — Focus Equities and Claridge Homes — did not submit more detailed proposals.
