Two people are dead after separate motorcycle accidents just outside Lunenburg, N.S., on Sunday.

The first occurred around 3:30 p.m. when a Harley-Davidson trike motorcycle crashed on Highway 332, according to Lunenburg District RCMP.

While the details remain unclear, police say both the driver, a 76-year-old man, and the passenger, a 78-year-old woman, were thrown from the vehicle after it veered off the road and into a ditch.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was transported by ambulance to the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater and then airlifted to the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.

Later that day, at around 8:50 p.m., officers responded to another motorcycle crash on Highway 3, about four kilometres away from the first crash.

Police say a 23-year-old Lunenburg man was driving a Kawasaki motorcycle when it left the road. He was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The RCMP collision reconstructionist attended both locations to investigate the causes.

The RCMP said this brings the total number of fatal motorcycle accidents in Nova Scotia to five since May 1.
