Lake Echo woman faces years in prison for crash that killed Mark Burnett
A 21-year-old Lake Echo, N.S., woman faces years in prison for an impaired driving conviction after a fatal crash that killed a 55-year-old man near Lawrencetown Beach last year.
Kyla MacLellan pleaded guilty April 7 to impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm. On Wednesday, she appeared in court for sentencing.
"I take full responsibility," she told the court as she cried.
The Crown asked for concurrent sentences of five years for Burnett's death and three years for injuries caused to Danielle Drake, who was also in Burnett's car.
The defence recommended three to five years in prison.
The judge will sentence MacLellan next Thursday.
MacLellan had no previous criminal record and recently finished high school. She intends to study horticulture at the Nova Scotia Community College.
MacLellan was driving a Honda Civic that collided with a sport utility vehicle on Highway 207 near Lawrencetown Beach in July 2013.
The crash killed Mark Burnett, who was on his way to work just before 6 a.m.
Two women, including MacLellan, were in the other car. Both women were ejected from the vehicle and sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Burnett was also transported to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, but was declared dead on arrival.
