Deadly weekend on N.S. roads claims 4 lives

It was a deadly weekend on the roads in Nova Scotia after three separate crashes claimed the lives of four people, and left three others in hospital — two in critical condition.

The first crash happened in Cape Breton on Friday night. A 36-year-old man died after crashing his vehicle into a ditch in the Highlands National Park.

Cheticamp RCMP said the early investigation into the crash shows the man was not wearing a seatbelt. Police said they believe alcohol may have played a factor in the crash.

On Saturday morning, a serious crash on Highway 103 near Hubbards resulted in two deaths, after an SUV and a van collided.

Myrtle Veinotte, 75, from Beech Hill was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the other victim as 87-year-old Luigi Liscio from Toronto. He died Saturday night in hospital in Halifax.  

Liscio was a passenger in an SUV carrying six people — two of whom were critically injured. Another person went to hospital with serious injuries.

A single vehicle crash Saturday night killed a 25-year-old man on Highway 329, in East River Point in Lunenburg County.

Police said the vehicle carrying four people left the roadway, struck a culvert, rolled and struck a power pole.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three passengers remain at the QEII hospital. Two suffered non-life threatening injuries and one is in serious but stable condition.
