Resident shot bear in defence on Sept. 12

Environment Yukon says a grizzly bear that was shot in defence by a resident two weeks ago may have been found in the area of Deep Creek of Lake Laberge.

Conservation officers will be in the area Saturday with a bear trap to attempt to capture the bear.

The bear was reported loose north of Whitehorse on Sept. 12, in the area of the North Klondike Highway and 10 Mile Road.

A resident shot the bear in defence. Conservation officers weren't able to locate the animal at the time.

Residents are being asked to use caution and not to approach the bear if they see it.

The Yukon government is also reminding Yukoners to secure garbage and compost bins, as bears are actively foraging for food.

Bear sightings can be reported to Environment Yukon's TIPP line at 1-800-661-0525.
