Backyard livestock attracting bears around Whitehorse
Yukon conservation officers are still looking for a grizzly bear that was shot and wounded, last week.
On Friday morning, a homeowner near Lake Laberge shot, but failed to kill, a bear that got into a chicken coop.
Conservation officer, Ryan Hennings, says chickens and other livestock are becoming a problem for attracting bears into the Whitehorse area.
"Chickens or turkeys or small livestock like that, that has been probably our biggest attractant and our biggest problem around Whitehorse this year," he said.
Hennings said anyone with small livestock, including chickens or turkeys, should consider erecting an electric fence to protect their animals. He says it would also help reduce conflicts with bears.
