Two men are recovering from gunshot wounds following what Whitehorse RCMP are calling a "targeted event."

In a news release, police said they received reports of gunshots near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Main Street. When officers arrived at the scene they found an injured man in his mid 20s lying in the road.

While investigating, police say they found a second, 19-year-old man nearby.

Both men were taken to Whitehorse General Hospital for treatment, RCMP said, and both men are expected to survive.

Police believe the two men are not from Yukon.

"At this time, we believe this is a targeted event, however we are still greatly concerned and encourage anyone with any information to please come forward," said Sgt. Calista Macleod.

Macleod said police are still investigating the incident.
