Whitehorse municipal election: Mayor, 2 councillors to run for re-election
Mayor Dan Curtis, council veterans Betty Irwin and Dave Stockdale to run in Oct. 15 election
Nominations for candidates in Whitehorse's municipal election aren't due until Sept. 24, but all but one of current city council members have already made their intentions known.
Mayor Dan Curtis says he will be running for re-election, as will Councillors Betty Irwin and Dave Stockdale.
Irwin says it's the most rewarding job she has ever had.
"It's absolutely incredible to find out how the city works, how it doesn't work sometimes, and to know that you are part of the future of the city," she said. "And besides I've had a lot of fun."
City Hall veteran Dave Stockdale has already set a record with 32 years on council.
"But the time just flies by and I'm still enthusiastic," he said.
"I still think I can still handle the work and I'm prepared to work for the community so everybody should get out and vote for me again."
Less enthusiastic is Councillor Mike Gladish, who says he won't be running again.
"I'm a one-term wonder," he said.
"It's been great serving the community for three years. It's a big education. It's rewarding but it's a huge commitment and I just cannot commit another three years at this point."
Councillor Jocelyn Curteanu says she's still not sure if she'll run again. John Streicker, meanwhile, announced in July he had joined the Yukon Liberal Party and would be seeking a seat in next year's territorial election.
Whitehorse's municipal election will take place Oct. 15.
