Vehicle fire sets Otto Drive carport on fire in Yellowknife

Homeowners have no idea how vehicle caught fire

The fire started early Tuesday morning. (submitted by Mark and Linda Wharton)
A number of fire trucks and RCMP were on the scene around 7 a.m. They always arrive in full force on Latham Island, where there are no fire hydrants.

Fortunately for the Hamiltons, who live in the home, sewage is still pumped out by truck so the driver was in the neighborhood early in the morning.

The Hamiltons say they have no idea how the vehicle caught fire, but they did say that someone had tried to steal a neighbour's car recently.

The flames charred most of the carport and much of the deck and front of the house, though the interior appears to be OK.

The fire department said it will issue a statement on the fire later this morning.
