Polar bear spotted near Iqaluit
Residents warned of weekend sighting near the landfill
A polar bear was spotted in Iqaluit near the landfill this weekend.
While it’s common to see the large predators wandering near some communities, it’s unusual in Nunavut’s capital. However, hunters say that's changing, and that the number of bears close to Iqaluit has been increasing over the past five years.
"People should pay more attention to see if there are any bears nearby or around because they are not easy to spot when you are not a hunter," said Methusalah Kunuk, vice-chairman of the Amarok Hunters and Trappers Association, in Inuktitut.
The bear, which appeared to be healthy, was spotted in an area known locally as the Causeway, which is close to the dump.
Two conservation officers scared the bear away with flare guns.
In case the bear becomes a danger to the community, the Amarok Hunters and Trappers Assocation have three polar bear tags left which could be used.
