Polar bear spotted around Iqaluit-area park

Nunavut wildlife officials are warning people in Iqaluit to be on the lookout for a polar bear that has been spotted around a park outside the city.

Local conservation officers said they received a report Tuesday morning about a bear that was seen in the vicinity of Qaummaarviit Territorial Park near Iqaluit.

"Myself and another officer did a 2½-hour boat patrol, then we did a foot patrol of the park and also drove around, and [there was] no sighting of a bear," conservation officer Steve Levesque told CBC News on Tuesday afternoon.

As a precaution, Levesque said the public should be very careful while going out on the land, including around places like the Qaummaarviit and Sylvia Grinnell territorial parks.
