Rankin Inlet Mayor Lorne Kusugak says he is joining the race for the Liberal nomination in Nunavut to succeedMP Nancy Karetak-Lindell.

Kusugak is the second candidate to step forward, following former MP Jack Anawak, who announced in January he'd like his old job back.

Kusugak told CBC News he has been thinking about seeking the Liberal nomination for quite a while.

He said he has talked at length about his decision withhiswife, Sally, and their three children. "We've had many discussions about it and I have their full support," he said.

Kusugak believes he has the communication skills in both English and Inuktitut the position requires.

Karetak-Lindellhas held the seat for the Liberals since 1997. She announcedlate last year she would not be seeking re-election in the next federal election.
