Man injured in Alaska Highway crash medevaced to Vancouver
Police rule out speed and alcohol as factors
The Whitehorse driver seriously injured in a traffic accident Wednesday has been medevaced to Vancouver.
The 48 year old man was initially taken to Whitehorse General Hospital after the accident in what police described as "grave" condition. RCMP haven't released the man's name.
The accident happened yesterday afternoon on the Alaska Highway at the intersection with Burns Road, near the entrance to the Whitehorse airport. The highway was closed for several hours while crews cleared away wreckage.
RCMP said a transport truck was heading north when it collided with a compact car that moved into the northbound lane. Witnesses told police the truck was travelling within the speed limit and had the right of way.
Police said the driver was the only occupant of the car. The driver of the truck was not injured.
RCMP are continuing to investigate, but said alcohol or road conditions were not a factor in the accident.
