Alaska Highway crash kills driver, sends passenger to hospital

A 34-year-old man is dead and his passenger is in hospital after the car he was driving went off the Alaska Highway near Whitehorse last night.

A 34-year-old man is dead and his passenger is in hospital after the car he was driving went off the Alaska Highway near Whitehorse last night.

RCMP say the single vehicle accident happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, about 20 kilometres west of the North Klondike Highway.

Police say it appears the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and the car was travelling in excess of 130 km/h. (Whitehorse RCMP)

A 2004 Dodge SRT-4 traveling south went off the right-hand side of the road, before coming to a rest about 100 metres off the roadway.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A 30-year-old female passenger was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital and is in serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating the single vehicle collision, but say it appears the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and the car was travelling in excess of 130 km/h.

Road conditions are not believed to have been a factor.
