Julie-Anne Miller named chair of Qulliq Energy Corporation

Julie-Anne Miller, the former vice-chair and current acting chair of the Qulliq Energy Corporation, was officially named the new chair of the public utility Monday in a statement by Minister Keith Peterson.

Julie-Anne Miller, former vice-chair, permanently takes over position after resignation of David Omilgoitok

Julie-Anne Miller has been named the new chair of the Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC).

The announcement was made yesterday in a written statement by Keith Peterson, the minister responsible for QEC.

Miller took up the chair on an interim basis following the resignation of David Omilgoitok in February of this year. She joined the board of QEC in January 2014 and was named vice-chair in June.

Omilgoitok was appointed chair in January of last year, following the resignation of five out of six board members, including Simon Merkosak.

In a letter that was made public, Merkosak said the board members quit out of frustration and concern over the Nunavut government's lack of consultation with the board.

In the statement, Minister Peterson says Miller "has made significant contributions to the board, and will strengthen efforts to bring positive change to the public utility."

Miller's appointment comes just two weeks after Peter Tumilty, current assistant deputy minister of Finance, was appointed the short-term president of Qulliq Energy Corporation while competition got underway to find a replacement.

Tumilty replaced Alain Barriault in the position. Premier Peter Taptuna announced Barriault's departure from the Nunavut government earlier in June without an explanation.

Audit reports from QEC are currently the subject of an RCMP investigation for potential criminal wrongdoing. The investigation came at the request of the Nunavut government in September 2014.
