Illnesses at Kangiqsualujjuaq arena investigated by Nunavik health officials
130 people from hockey tournament were seen by medical staff on Friday
Nunavik health officials are still trying to determine what caused dozens of people involved in the bantam regional hockey tournament to become ill at the arena in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Que., on Friday.
In a written statement issued Monday, the regional health board said 140 people were examined by medical staff. Several of them had symptoms such as a cough, headache, nausea and in some cases vomiting and anxiety.
About 30 people were given oxygen and seven were transferred to Kuujjuaq for further medical attention.
The majority of those affected were teenage athletes. All have now recovered.
Health board officials, the community and the Kativik Regional Government are working together to identify the cause of the illnesses.
"The proper authorities will take the necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur again in Nunavik's recreational facilities," said the release.
The community's arena will remain closed until further notice.
