The Northwest Territories Power Corporation says power has now been restored to all customers in Fort Smith, N.W.T.

The restoration follows an on-and-off power outage that began at roughly 1:30 p.m. Friday, when the entire community of about 2,460 people first lost power. The situation prompted the town to turn its community and recreation centre into an emergency warming shelter for residents.

In an update posted to Facebook just after 9 p.m., the power corporation asked people to conserve power as much as possible over the weekend.

"Although power supply is currently stable, there is only a limited amount of extra capacity available," it stated.

"Unplug appliances that are not in use and, if possible, avoid energy intensive activities such as laundry."

Temperatures in Fort Smith hovered around –26 C at 6 p.m. Friday. The overnight low is –29 C.

The power corporation said any individual customers still without power should call them at 855-575-6872.
