Andy Carvill sworn in as Carcross Tagish chief

Yukon's premier, a former territorial commissioner and the outgoing chief were all on hand to offer congratulations and words of support to Andy Carvill, as he was sworn in as the new Carcross Tagish First Nation chief on Tuesday.

"I am deeply and truly humbled," Carvill said after the ceremony in Carcross. "It's time for our people to come together, and I feel it."

Carvill won last week's election by a large margin, easily unseating Dan Cresswell. The former chief was at the swearing in, urging First Nations citizens to support his successor.

Carvill said he looks forward to tackling issues such as housing and education, and making sure to stay connected to the First Nation's members.

"We have citizens or members throughout other parts of Canada and I look forward to representing all of them," he said.

"I've got a lot of work to do."

Premier Darrell Pasloski was also at the swearing in ceremony, offering congratulations to Carvill. The new chief said he has a good relationship with the premier.

"I'm glad I can call him a friend. We've known each other a number of years," Carvill said.

Carvill is the former grand chief of the Council of Yukon First Nations.
