2015 Ivakkak sled dog race to start in Kuujjuarapik March 16

The annual Ivakkak dogteam race in Nunavik will run about 600 km between Kuujjuarapik and Puvirnituq this year, starting March 16.

The annual Ivakkak dogteam race in Nunavik will run between Kuujjuarapik and Puvirnituq this year, starting March 16.

The race is organized by Makivik Corporation's renewable resource department.

Michael Gordon, vice-president of Makivik Corporation, says final details are being drafted and will be sent to communities soon​.

"It's 601 km from Kuujjuarapik​ to Puvirnituq, that's according to the maps and trail that the race will follow."

Gordon also says the racers will get to view Okpik's Dream once they cross the finish line in Puvirnituq. The new documentary is about Harry Okpik, a one-legged musher who enters the Ivakkak race each year.

Allen Gordon and Manngi Kooktook from Kuujjuaq, Que., won the 2014 race from Kangiqsujuaq to Tasiujaq.
