Lyndon Butler, 21, appeared in court Thursday in connection with the shooting death of Nick Winsor, 20, in St. John's Saturday night.

Butler was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder, the same charges Phillip Pynn, 25,  is facing in connection with Winsor's death.  He was also ordered to stay away from Pynn and any of his immediate family, including Pynn's step or half siblings.

Butler has a criminal record including assault, drug trafficking and firearms offences.

He was arrested Wednesday on Michener Avenue in Mount Pearl and was held overnight for his appearance in provincial court in St. John's.

Winsor was killed in what sources believe was an attempted robbery at a home on Portugal Cove Road. The homeowner was assaulted in the same incident.

Bob Buckingham, Butler's lawyer, said Butler was upset and devastated by the arrest and will be pleading not guilty.

Butler's next court date is Aug. 1.
