Reynolds died from cancer in 2011.

His wife, Barbara Reynolds, said it was great to find out the park would be dedicated to her husband.

"It's just such an honour, for Paul especially, and he deserves every bit of it. He worked so, so very hard for this community and for the city as a whole. He was a great man and we miss him deeply," she said.

MHA Steve Kent, Mayor Dennis O'Keefe and other city councillors were on had for the sod turning.

Reynolds was the mayor of Wedgewood Park before it amalgamated with St. John's in the early 1990s.
