The mayor of St. John's says auditors have uncovered at least $100,000 in questionable spending during an internal investigation at the city's municipal depot.

The city announced earlier in January that it discovered problems with purchase orders and ordered the internal review.

"What we have found so far is questionable purchase orders and those questionable purchase orders have a value of about $100,000" said Mayor Dennis O'Keefe.

"They are low value purchase orders and I believe that a low value purchase order would be purchase orders below $350."

CBC news has confirmed that the employee at the center of the review has retired.

When the review was first announced, the city said the employee was on sick leave.

O'Keefe says a new person has been appointed to the job of city manager of street and parks.

Auditors have so far reviewed purchase orders that go back two years. O'Keefe said based on the findings they are now looking at a third year, and he says the auditors could go back even farther.
