Audit launched over St. John's depot spending

The City of St. John's has launched an internal audit at its depot after officials discovered problems with purchase orders.

The City of St. John's has launched an internal investigation at its depot after officials discovered problems with purchase orders.

Mayor Dennis O'Keefe confirmed to CBC News that an internal audit was launched after officials learned in December there was an issue with what he described as low-value purchase orders.

O'Keefe said Wednesday the investigation may determine whether or not the person used the purchase orders for personal gain.

"They will conclude their investigation, I would hope, within the next two weeks so that we can get a resolution to this. Because we need to get a resolution to this, one way or the other, as quickly as possible."

No disciplinary action has as yet been taken, although one staff member is currently on sick leave.
