Mill Street Brewpub opens its doors in St. John's
Longshore Porter to be first beer brewed by Mill Street in Atlantic Canada
Craft beer lovers on the Avalon are in luck.
A new Mill Street Brewpub is opening up in partnership with Bier Markt on Harbour Drive in St. John's.
The destination for beer drinkers opened on Monday and plans are in motion to offer 46 draught taps and a range of locally-brewed options at the pub.
Steve Abrams, co-founder Mill St. Brewery, said the location will feature a "full-scale brewing facility" similar to other other locations across Canada, but will have its own local products that will make it unique in the city and across the country.
"What's really cool is that each Brewpub has unique recipes, so there's a bit of healthy competition between all of the different Brewpubs," he told CBC Wednesday.
"If it's a recipe that everybody loves, hopefully it makes it into our mix pack which gets distributed across Canada."
Unique local brews
The first beer brewed at the Harbour Drive location will be the Longshore Porter, a beer the company said was inspired by generations of sailors in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The porter marks the first-ever batch of beer from Mill Street brewed in Atlantic Canada, and the company said it won't be the last.
Alexis Wagner, head brewer for the St. John's pub, said the company plans on looking at things unique to Newfoundland and Labrador that can be used as the basis for new brews.
"My hope is that every single month I will be brewing several different unique beers that are one-off recipes that we develop locally and are specifically suited to our people and our province," she said.
"Our plan is to blend a lot of our berries, our local fruit, a lot of things that people don't even know we grow here, into our beer."
Wagner said the company will also be encouraging locals to suggest new ideas and be part of the beer-making process.
