Bier Markt statue turning heads in St. John's
'Don't get your pee hot,' says tourism promoter
It's a landmark in Brussels, and now a replica of the Manneken Pis outside a new St. John's restaurant is giving passersby a few chuckles.
The statue of a naked boy responding to the call of nature went up Wednesday on the exterior of the new Bier Markt restaurant on Harbour Drive.
Since then, it's drawn crowds of chuckling people to the downtown location. Check out the reaction in this CBC YouTube video.
"It's become something of a tourist attraction," said Gaylynne Lambert, marketing specialist with Downtown St. John's. "And anything that brings people downtown is a good thing."
The naked boy is a trademark feature of all Bier Markts in Canada, according to a staffer at The Esplanade location in Toronto where the statue is inside.
People don't seem offended, said Lambert.
"Don't get your pee hot," is her message to those who might be miffed.
