Man on Portuguese trawler medevaced to St. John's

A crew member on a Portuguese fishing vessel has been airlifted to hospital in St. John's, following a doctor's recommendation. 

The Halifax maritime rescue centre says a 21-year-old man was sick onboard the Pascoal Atlantico trawler on Tuesday.

The trawler, located about 540 kilometres east of St. John's, was just inside the maximum range for a Cormorant helicopter. A Gander-based Cormorant was sent to the Grand Banks, and a crew was able to hoist the man aboard. 

The helicopter was accompanied by a Hercules plane based in Nova Scotia. 

The man arrived at St. John's International Airport around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and was taken to the Health Sciences Centre.

There's no word on the man's condition.

CCGS Cape Roger also assisted in the rescue.
