Land & Sea archival moment: Bay de Verde 1981
Land & Sea is celebrating 50 years on the air this season.
CBC Newfoundland and Labrador librarian Carolyn Atkinson has been digging out old footage that hasn't been seen in years, including this rare look at a unique way of life.
Bay de Verde from 1981
Bay de Verde is one of Newfoundland and Labrador's oldest fishing settlements. Land & Sea's Herb Davis visited the community in 1981.
It was mid-June and the trap fishery was in full swing. Fishermen had no problem getting their catch of cod, and both wharves in the community were full of action.
Cutting cod tongues was a lucrative business, too. In this archival video, you'll see youngsters up to their elbows in fish guts, cutting tongues as fast as they could.
