Goodbye David, hello Jaxen: N.L.'s top 100 baby names

Did you have a baby last year?

If so, there's a good chance you named your new son Jackson or your daughter Olivia.

Jackson and Olivia were the most popular baby names in 2014, followed closely by Liam and Emma, then Jack and Lily.

Jackson was also the most popular boy's name in 2013 (also spelled Jaxon, Jaxxon, Jaxxen, or Jaxen).

While Emma topped the girls list in 2013, it was bumped down to number two in 2014.

All this information is now online as part of the province's open government initiative.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has released several sets of open-access data, including demographic information, ferry on-time records, and the most popular baby names in 2013 and 2014.

Charlie more popular for girls than boys

The list may surprise some people, as many traditional names are outranked by more contemporary alternatives.

Charlie was only the 72nd most popular boys name, but was the 11th most popular name for girls.

David doesn't even make the top 100 for boys, but Jaden was number 18.

Among girls, Autumn was a more popular girls name than Summer, but both were more popular than Maria. (Winter and Spring did not make the cut).

Girls names like Neveah, Adison, Madison, and Savannah well outranked classics like Elizabeth and Jane.

Kathryn was number 60, but Catherine was nowhere to be found.

Among the baby boys, biblical names were more popular, with Luke, Jacob and Noah all making the top 10.

Also high on the boys list were Mason, Carter, Caden and Ryder.
