Gerry Byrne looking at provincial run

Gerry Byrne, the MP for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, revealed during Sunday's Liberal leadership convention that he may be interested in pursuing a provincial seat in 2015.

Rumours swirled in February this year that Byrne and his fellow MP Scott Simms were interested in seeking the leadership of the provincial Liberals, but both later announced that they would not be pursuing the role.

Byrne told CBC News that he is now interested in moving to provincial politics. 

"I've made no secret of the fact that I would be interested [in running provincially]," Byrne said.

According to Byrne, the announcement of a cabinet shuffle in January got his attention.

"I thought to be honest with you that that cabinet shuffle was going to lead to a vacancy in the Humber East district. I thought Tom Marshall was not only leaving cabinet, but he was actually leaving elected office," he said.

"To be honest with you, I thought my political path was about to change."

However, Byrne said that Marshall did not resign, and his love of being an MP made him reconsider leaving federal politics.

Byrne said he hasn't made a decision either way at this point in time.

"I haven't made up my mind. I think I can stick around for a while."
